Zoë Yadira Saldaña Nazario is an American film actress born in Passaic, New Jersey on June 19th, 1978. Zoë's career in entertainment began in 1999 when she appeared on the Refuge (Part 2)" episode of the legal drama series Law & Order. Zoe's first work in speculative fiction was in 2003 when she had a bit role as pirate Anamaria in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. In case you're wondering who she was, she is the pirate who slaps Captain Jack Sparrow across the face.
Zoë was destined to take part in two major science fiction franchises in the upcoming years. In 2009 she was cast in the role of starship Communications Officer Nyota Uhura in the feature film reboot of the Star Trek movie franchise. The role of Uhura was made famous back in the 1960s by actress Nichelle Nichols, who played her on the original Star Trek television series.
The next big movie work for Zoë was playing a member of the blue-skinned alien race known as the Na'vi in James Cameron's 2009 blockbuster Avatar. She was the female lead in the film and her character's name was Neytiri.
Zoë returned to the Star Trek franchise in 2013 for the sequel movie, Star Trek: Into Darkness.
Although playing Neytiri may have been Zoë's first work as an offbeat-colored alien, it would not be her last. Zoë took her place in the growing ranks of actors in the Marvel Cinematic Universe when she took on the role of green-skinned ass-kicking space heroine Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014.
