Yongary, also spelled Yongarry was a giant monster and the central antagonist from the eponymous 1967 film Yongary, Monster from the Deep. He was played by actor Cho Kyoung-min.

Biography[]

Yongary was a giant, reptilian monster of ancient Korean lore. In the late 1960s, a bomb detonated in the Middle East awakened Yongary and he began making his way towards South Korea, causing a wave of earthquakes in his wake. Yongary attacked Seoul, destroying several national landmarks including the Great South Gate in Namdaemun Market. He then made his way to the oil refineries where he began consuming massive amounts of oil. He continued to do so until a young child, Yoo Young, turned off the flow to the refineries' basins. Enraged, Yongary started attacking until an explosion at the refinery proved to have a chemical effect on it. The Korean Government then used oil to draw Yongary to a local river, and killed it with a refined version of the compound, ammonia precipitate.

Abilities[]

In addition to his prodigious size and strength, Yongary's primary power is the ability to project a stream of flame from his mouth. He can also generate a laser beam from a horn that grows from the tip of his snout.

Notes & Trivia[]

  • Yongary was one of several obscure monster archetypes inspired by the popularity of the Godzilla franchise.
  • Director Ki-duk Kim based the concept of Yongary on Pulgasari, a monster from Korean mythology. Pulgasari was featured in a 1985 North Korean film, but renamed Bulgasari, played by Kenpachiro Satsuma and Little Man Machan.
  • Another iteration of the Yongary character was brought to life in the 1999 film Reptilian, directed by Hyung-rae Shim.
  • One of the more notable bloopers found in the film is vent tube used to produce Yongary's fire breath. In several scenes from the movie, the pipe that extends from the mouth of the creature is clearly visible.
