Cannonball is the code name used by Sam Guthrie, who is a fictional comic book superhero featured in books published by Marvel Comics. He is part of the mainstream Marvel Universe and is associated with the X-Men family of titles. Sam Guthrie is classically presented as a member of the New Mutants, its successor X-Force, and eventually, the X-Men.

The Far Future[]
One-thousand years into the future, Cable discovered that a young boy from Cumberland, Kentucky named Sam Guthrie was an External High Lord, destined to live on well into the 24th century. It was this knowledge that prompted Cable to travel back in time to lead up a new contingent of the New Mutants, which soon after evolved into X-Force. (X-Force 8)</ref>
Abilities[]
- Thermal propulsion: Sam generates high thermal energy from his body that enables him to fly short distances for a brief period of time.
- Force field generation: Sam Guthrie generates a force field that surrounds his body. This is only activated in concert with thermal propulsion.
- Limited invulnerability: Sam is virtually invulnerable while using his thermal propulsion to rocket across the sky. This is vital in protecting him from rebounding off of solid materials as well as impact landings.
