Paul Cartier is a fictional cannibal and wendigo, and a recurring antagonist featured in comic books published by Marvel Comics. He is associated primarily with the Hulk line of titles and first appeared in Incredible Hulk, Volume 2 #162 in April, 1973.

Paul Cartier was the brother of Marie Cartier and was friends with Georges Baptiste and Henri Cluzot. One day, the three of them went hunting in the woods of Northern Canada when they were set upon by a pack of wolves. The group sought shelter in a cave, but Cluzot died from his injuries. The wolves kept them trapped inside for days. Eventually, starvation set it, and Paul found himself in the unenviable position of having to consume meat from Cluzot's corpse. An act of cannibalism in Canada awakened the curse of the Wendigo, which dictated that any man who would eat the flesh of another would transform into a monster. Paul succumbed to the curse and became the Wendigo.
Encounter with the Hulk[]

Marie Cartier, Georges Baptiste and several other hunters set out in search of the Wendigo, believing that it had killed Paul. Marie encountered the Hulk, and mistakenly believed him to be the Wendigo. The Hulk confessed that he didn't even know what a Wendigo was, but soon learned the truth about Paul and his condition. The mind of Paul Cartier was still very much alive, albeit trapped inside of a flesh-craving beast. He telepathically reached out to the Hulk, begging for help, noting that his mind was quickly deteriorating and it wouldn't be long before there would nothing left but a monster. [2]
The Hulk searched about through the woods and ultimately came upon the Wendigo. The two got into a massive fight, and the Wendigo proved that he was more than physically capable of handling the Hulk's blows, and dealing out some powerful punches himself. Their fight carried over into a logging camp, and the Wendigo used chains and construction equipment to combat the Hulk. Ultimately, the two parted ways, but it wasn't long after that the Hulk would go out in search of the Wendigo again in the hopes of freeing Paul's dwindling psyche from the curse. [3]
