Mervyn Johns was a classically trained Welsh actor. Outside of the sci-fi genre, he is best known for playing the role of Bob Cratchett in the 1951 adaptation of A Christmas Carol. Although Johns performed in both film and television, his only genre roles was as Jone in 1984 and Mister Coker in the 1962 adaptation of John Wyndham's The Day of the Triffids.
