The Lunatic Legion is a fictional alien militia featured in comic books published by Marvel Comics. They were first referenced in Captain Marvel, Volume 1 #34 in September, 1974. They made their first actual appearance in Captain Marvel, Volume 1 #35 in November, 1974.
Description[]
The Lunatic Legion were a fringe group of Blue-skinned Kree. They believed in the perceived strength of racial purity, and rebelled against their white-skinned brethren. The biggest obstacle to their agenda was the white Kree Mar-Vell. The Lunatic Legion abducted an Earthling named Robert Hunter and experimented on him, giving him the power of self-detonation. They sent him back to Earth with orders to steal Compound 13, which was being contained at a United States Air Force base in Gary, Indiana.
History[]
The Lunatic Legion were a small cell of fantatical blue-skinned Kree, who believed in racial purity and took action against their white-skin Kree brothers, whom they felt were inferior. Based out of the Blue Area of Earth's moon, they engaged in several attempts to facilitate their goals - not the least of which, included a failed attempt to assassinate the Supreme Intelligence. The Lunatic Legion also attempted to murder the Kree captain, Mar-Vell.
Their bid to kill Mar-Vell ultimately proved successful, though not in the manner that they expected. The Lunatic Legion kidnapped an Earth human named Robert Hunter and experimented upon him, giving him explosive atomic powers. They sent him out to steal Compound 13, which brought him into conflict with Mar-Vell. During their battle, Mar-Vell was exposed to lethal doses of radiation, which eventually gave him cancer, resulting in his death.
Years later, a Kree warrior named Galen-Kor formed a second Lunatic Legion, which he named after the original group. This group was likewise based out of Earth's moon, and fought up against the Avengers.
