- The character of Starbuck was created by executive producer, developer and teleplay writer Glen A. Larson.
- The name Starbuck is taken from a character featured in Herman Melville's 1851 novel Moby-Dick. The character is the first mate under Captain Ahab on the ship the Pequod.
- The character of Starbuck was reimagined for the 2003 Battlestar Galactica miniseries and the 2004 Battlestar Galactica regular series. The character went from being a male to a female and was played by actress Katee Sackhoff. The character's actual name is Kara Thrace, but the name Starbuck was used as a call sign during her service aboard the Galactica.
- The final fate of Starbuck is unknown. It is safe to assume however that he likely died alone stranded on Planet Starbuck at the end of the Galactica 1980 series finale "The Return of Starbuck".
