Leslie Nielsen is a Canadian actor born in Saskatchewan on February 11th, 1926. Known to modern audiences for his slapstick comedy roles in farcial spoofs such as 2001: A Space Travesty, Nielsen actually came from a dramatic film background. His earliest work in the science fiction genre was playing a character named Farragut in the two-part adaptation of Jules Verne's Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea featured in the 1950s television series Tales of Tomorrow. He appeared on four more episodes of the series playing various characters.

Nielsen's first major film role was playing Commander J.J. Adams in Fred M. Wilcox's 1956 classic sci-fi adventure movie Forbidden Planet.

In 1965, he played the role of Adams in "The Creature" episode of Irwin Allen's popular television series Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea.

Leslie Nielsen continued to play a variety of roles in television, including episodes of S.W.A.T., Vega$ and The Love Boat, but it wasn't until the 1980 comedy Airplane that Nielsen completely reinvented himself as a comedic actor. The popularity of Airplane provided him with the vehicle to launch the Police Squad! television series. Although Police Squad! was a short-lived program, Nielsen's character, Detective Frank Drebin proved extremely popular and the character spun off into the Naked Gun series of films. Nielsen continued with his slapstick comedy in the 1983 box office flop The Creature Wasn't Nice playing a character named Captain Jamieson.

In the year 2000, Nielsen starred as Richard "Dick" Dix in 2001: A Space Travesty, which was a lampoon of the 1968 Stanley Kubrick classic 2001: A Space Odyssey.

In 2006, he played President Baxter Harris in Scary Movie 4, which poked fun at the 2002 M. Night Shyamalan film Signs.

Leslie Nielsen passed away from complications from pneumonia in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on November 28th, 2010.
