Judge Dredd is an American feature film of the science fiction and action genres. It is based on the Judge Dredd comic book franchise as originally published in the United Kingdom in the sci-fi anthology magazine 2000 AD. It was directed by Danny Cannon with a screenplay written by William Wisher and Steven E. de Souza based on a story treatment by Wisher and Michael De Luca. The movie was produced by Hollywood Pictures and Cinergi Pictures Entertainment and released theatrically in the United States on June 30th, 1995. The film stars Sylvester Stallone as the eponymous hard-line law enforcement officer Judge Joseph Dredd. Actor Armand Assante takes on the role of the movie's antagonist, Judge Rico, with Max von Sydow as Judge Eustace Fargo, and Diane Lane as the female lead, Judge Hershey. For a little comic relief, the film also includes Rob Schneider as a small-time crook known as Fergie. Another adaptation of the comic, called simply Dredd, was released in 2012, but is not connected to the continuity of this film in any way.
