He appeared in four of the seven episodes of the series, but had a more prominent role when he reprised the character for the 1962 sequel, The Andromeda Breakthrough. In this series, Hollis appeared in all six episodes. In 1972, Hollis forged himself a place in Doctor Who history when he played the role of Professor Sondergaard in "The Mutants" storyline from the original Doctor Who series. In the film, Hollis' character was credited only as "Lando's aide". That same year, Hollis also played the role of Klytus observer #2 in the campy 1980 adaptation of Alex Raymond's Flash Gordon.

Hollis returned to the Superman franchise in 1987 when he played a Russian general in Superman IV: The Quest for Peace.

Hollis' last role in a sci-fi program was in the fourth episode of the British series The Day of the Triffids. John Hollis passed away in London, England on October 18th, 2005 at the age of 77.
