Jean Burgess was the wife of scientist Carl Burgess and the mother of Sally Burgess. She lived with her husband on Lightning Island off Lake Michigan. One afternoon in 1952, Jeannie and Carl returned to the cottage they were living in where Carl conducted many of his geological experiments with his colleagues Sam Thorne and Cap Zanser. That evening, a terrible rainstorm washed over the island and Jeannie learned that Cap had been found dead on the beach; an apparent victim of a lightning strike. Carl and Sam analyzed the strange nature of Cap's death while Sally told her mother about the "dune rollers" - a local legend that Cap had once told her. Jeannie took it upon herself to go to the shack where Cap had been living to recover some of his quartz samples. When she arrived, she pocked the samples, but noticed a strange, menacing light coming out over the lake. Jean began to panic and telephoned Sam, who by this point, had learned that the lightning discharge had originated from an ancient meteor that was slowly reconstituting itself. Sam warned her to dispose of Cap's rock samples and return home.
