Iowa is a state located in the Midwestern United States, an area often referred to as the "American Heartland." It derives its name from the Ioway people, one of the many American Indian tribes that occupied the state at the time of European exploration. Iowa was a part of the French colony of New France. After the Louisiana Purchase, settlers laid the foundation for an agriculture-based economy in the heart of the Corn Belt.

One of Iowa's most significant contributions to the sci-fi genre is that it is the birth place of James T. Kirk, a character immortalized by actor William Shatner in the Star Trek TV and film franchise. A young Jim Kirk was seen evading a pursuing police officer across the fields of Iowa in the 2009 film Star Trek. In homage to the character, William Shatner created the reality TV series Invasion Iowa, in which he tricks the people of the town of Riverside into believing that they are starring in a sci-fi action film, also titled Invasion Iowa.

Another Star Trek connection is that Iowa is also the birth place of actress Kate Mulgrew, who portrayed the role of Captain (later Admiral) Kathryn Janeway on the UPN television series Star Trek: Voyager. She was born in the city of Dubuque.

In the continuity of DC Comics, Iowa is where the fictional town of Fallville is located. The characters of Henry Allen and Nora Thompson hail from Fallville. They are the parents of Barry Allen, who becomes known as the costumed super-speedster, The Flash.
