Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation (LASER or laser) is a mechanism for emitting electromagnetic radiation, typically light or visible light, via the process of stimulated emission. The emitted laser light is usually a spatially coherent, narrow low-divergence beam, that can be manipulated with lenses. Lasers play an integral part in the worlds of science fiction and they are chiefly used to power various weapons and technology found in futuristic settings.

Lieutenant is a military, naval, paramilitary, fire service, emergency medical services or police officer rank. Lieutenant may also appear as part of a title used in various other organisations with a codified command structure. It often designates someone who is "second-in-command," and as such, may precede the name of the rank directly above it.

Lieutenant Commander is a commissioned officer rank in many navies both terrestrial and interplanetary. The rank is superior to a Lieutenant and subordinate to a Commander. The corresponding rank in most armies (armed services) and air forces is Major, and in the Royal Air Force and other Commonwealth air forces is Squadron Leader.
The Long Night is a phrase used in the Andromeda television series. It refers to a period of time following the Battle of Hephaistos and the subsequent collapse of the Systems Commonwealth, in which civilization declined, bringing about a veritable Dark Ages. Former Commonwealth worlds began conducting internecine struggles against one another in which millennia's worth of technology and culture diappeared forever.
