Frederic Brown was an American science fiction and mystery writer. He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on October 29th, 1906. One of his most well known stories, "Arena" was first published in Astounding Science Fiction in June, 1944. Frederic Brown passed away on March 11th, 1972 at the age of 65.

- The "Arena" episode of the original Star Trek television series is loosely based on Brown's short story. Brown received a writing credit in the episode.
- "Arena" was adapted by Gerry Conway and artists John Buscema and Dick Giordano as an illustrated story in the Unknown Worlds of Science Fiction Special in 1976.
