Fred Hoyle was by vocation, a British astronomer and cosmologist. He, along with author John Elliot, conceived and wrote the backstory for the 1961 A for Andromeda televsion series as well as its 1962 sequel, The Andromeda Breakthrough. Hoyle and Elliot also wrote the 1961 A for Andromeda novelization.
