"Past Is Prologue" is the twelfth episode of season one of the science fiction television series Defiance and the thirteenth episode of the series overall (if one counts the two-part series pilot as two episodes). It was directed by Michael Nankin and written by Michael Taylor. It first aired on Syfy on Monday, July 1st, 2013 at 9:00 pm. In this episode, Amanda Rosewater hosts a memorial for the late mayor, Nicolette Riordon at the NeedWant. Datak Tarr continues to play the political field as election fever heats up. Datak's scheming yields disastrous results for Joshua Nolan, forcing him to reconsider his place in Defiance. Stahma Tarr fears that she can no longer trust Kenya Rosewater.
