Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons was a children's science fiction television series which aired in the United Kingdom from 1967 to 1968. The program made use of Supermarionation, a technique that employs puppetry and marionettes in place of live actors. The series was produced by Century 21 Television, an independent film and television studio founded by Reg Hill, John Read, Gerry Anderson and Sylvia Anderson. The series took place in the year 2068 and centered around a race of Martians known as Mysterons and the ongoing hostilities between them and those of planet Earth. Combatting the efforts of the Martians are Earth's global defense network, Spectrum. Spectrum's champion is Captain Scarlet, a bold hero who possesses the ability to return from the dead through a process known as "retro-metabolism".
